Bid levels are rising

With currency markets waiting for the outcome of the Scottish Referendum, it was to be expected that we would see the bid value slow down during the week. Nevertheless, there was a continued increase of 1.2% with £130,000 of new positions added. Most noticeable has been the strength in bid levels gradually rising. Our hot bids show an overall increase in value over their last traded price, which is a reverse in trend from the bidding down we’ve seen during the last 18 months. Is confidence finally returning to the fine wine market?

Sellers have been the more active party through the week with a rise of 2% in offer value, nudging over the £2 million for the first time since early August. With offers such as DRC Richebourg 2010 at £2,600 per 3 x 75cl, £500 under the last traded price, La Tache 2010 at £6,200 per 3, £150 under and L’Eglise Clinet 2006 at £1,300 per dozen, £280 under, there are some great deals for the taking.

For followers of Domaine Lamarche, there is a lovely single collection of wines currently on offer with 33 cases from 2008 to 2011 from La Grande Rue Grand Cru through to village Vosne Romanee. Be sure to click on the complete stock lists to see all new wines being offered this week.

Although bids appear to be getting stronger, we’ve still seen declines in notable trades. Mouton Rothschild 1986 was the biggest faller trading at £5,450, down 15.5% since this time last year. Margaux 2009 also dropped significantly by 11.5% since mid June to £4,600. Cos d’Estournel was another 2009 that took a tumble, down 6.1% since June to £1,850. However, there were some solid climbs for Cheval Blanc 2005, up 11.7% since July to £3,775, and Latour 1996 rising 8.9% in the same period to £4,900. Lafite Rothschild was another older vintage that rose marginally, up 1.9% since last month to £4,900.

This week buyers are on the hunt for deals of Bordeaux Second Growths, particularly the Leoville’s, Montrose and both Pichons, all across multiple vintages. Beychevelle and Lynch Bages are also in heavy demand. If you do have these wines to offer, please get in touch at trading@cavex.co.uk so that we may match you to these willing buyers.

Finally, we were delighted to see Cavex hitting the broadsheets this week as we briefly appeared in the Sunday Telegraph. Cavex was benchmarked against wine trade titans Berry Bros & Rudd and wine trading platform pioneers Liv-ex. As we continue to expand our credentials, we’re always proud to be mentioned in such good company.
