Bordeaux prices continue to soften

Market activity on the Cavex platform has been on a softening trajectory over the past seven days with a noticeable dip in bidding activity. The country is suffering from a barrage of terrible weather and it appears that buyers and sellers in the fine wine market are battening down the hatches in similar style to UK residents.

With Chinese New Year behind us, bidding activity has slowed further this week.  Many non UK buyers are citing that the strong sterling rate is affecting their spending patterns. There have been 74 new cases added for the week with buyers noticeably looking for Chateau Beychevelle across vintages 2006 to 2010 around the £500 to £520 mark. If you have stock to offer, please do get in touch as we have willing buyers looking for good parcels.

Sellers this week have been been more active, but as our members will see from the ticker activity there is far more red than in previous weeks. Noticeable trades of the week were Margaux 2003 at £3600 (12) down 11.7% from it’s last traded price back in October.

Chateau Cos d’Estournel 2009 fell 4.8% to £2000 (12), whilst the most heavily traded product through Cavex since we launched, Petit Mouton 2009, has found a level at £1050 per dozen, with plenty of demand still visible at this price.

Lynch Bages 2006 at £735 (12) and Domaine Romanee Conti’s La Tache 2004 at £3300 (3) bucked the trend from this week’s trade highlights, both with positive climbs of 3.5% and 2.8% respectively.

What will the coming week bring? Continued softening of prices across Bordeaux, whilst Burgundy, Italy and Champagne continue to hold their ground? Whatever the weather brings we’re in for a stormy ride.
