Penfolds St Henri Shiraz 2008 6 x 75cl at £200 IB x 3 cases

Plush, fleshy and mouth filling—showcasing a cleverly woven texture and deceptive (fruit) weight. Nectarine and blood plum fruits courted by the largesse of big, ripe and round tannins. Maturation precursors already awoken, although yet to ascend/unfurl—fresh wallet leather, pan scrapings, … Long and persistent. Polished. – Penfolds

Torbreck The Factor 2000 6 x 75cl at £480 IB x 2 cases

The 2000 The Factor (1,000 cases) has benefited from the fact that Powell decided not to produce a Run Rig in 2000. It is a compelling wine of great richness, multiple dimensions, and glorious levels of blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso, and leather. Sweet, expansive, and opulent, it is a lusty, hedonistic, mouth-staining Shiraz that should drink well for 10-15 years. 95pts RP

Marquis d’Angerville Volnay Fremiets 2006 12 x 75cl at £390 IB x 1 case

The aromatic profile is a small step up in elegance and refinement though here too the nose is discreet and reserved with simply gorgeous layered and equally airy red pinot fruit aromas that introduce with flair the intensely mineral-driven and beautifully textured flavors that possess striking precise and finishing cut. I really like the sophisticated quality of the tannins and this should be really lovely in time. In sum, classic Frémiets. Drink: 2014+. 89-92pts BH

CNDP Cuvee Reservee Domaine de Pegau 2009 6 x 75cl at £210 IB x 8 cases

The bottled 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Reservee is as compelling as I thought it would be after tasting it last year. A blend of 85% Grenache with the rest Syrah, Mourvedre and small dollops of the other authorized varietals, this wine tends to come from the estate’s holdings in the eastern sector of Chateauneuf du Pape. The opaque purple-colored 2009 exhibits magnificent, rich berry fruit intertwined with cedar, Christmas fruitcake, licorice, charcuterie, roasted meats, smoked duck, kirsch, blackberries and god knows what else. It is an amazingly complex, rich, full-throttle wine that reminds me somewhat of what the 1990 tasted like in 1994/1995. It is a magnificent Chateauneuf du Pape. If you are looking for the garrigue component, it’s also there. 98pts RP

CNDP Chateau de Beaucastel 2003 12 x 75cl at £390 IB x 9 cases

The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape turned out as well as I could have hoped and is certainly an outstanding wine, deep ruby/purple with a tight but promising nose of black fruits, loamy, earthy notes intermixed with pepper, smoke, licorice, and dried herbs. The wine is somewhat closed in the mouth (but it had been bottled 30 days prior to my visit), has full bodied, moderately high, slightly rustic tannins, but big-impact flavors with plenty of texture, density, and purity. Give this wine 3-5 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 20 years. 92+pts RP

Cantemerle 2009 12 x 75cl at £230 IB x 25 cases

Readers looking for the more ethereal, elegant side of Bordeaux need search no further than Cantemerle, one of the estates in the very southern end of the Medoc. Dense ruby/purple (nearly opaque), this wine offers up notes of lead pencil shavings, spring flowers, raspberries and black cherries. The wine is ethereal, medium-bodied, and by no means a blockbuster, but long and intellectual. However, the tannins are present, and the wine is certainly capable of putting on weight with time in the bottle. Give it 3-4 years of bottle age and drink it over the following 25+ years. 91+ pts RP

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion 2007 12 x 75cl at £475 IB x 15 cases

The 2007 La Chapelle de la Mission is a spicy effort revealing notes of unsmoked cigar tobacco, bay leaf, incense, Christmas fruitcake, and black currants. It is a round, easy-going wine to enjoy over the next 7-8 years. 2010 – 2018. 88pts RP

Grand Puy Ducasse 2006 12 x 75cl at £260 IB x 2 cases

Ducasse has definitely turned up the level of quality over the last 7-8 years. Classic creme de cassis notes intermixed with licorice, spring flowers, a bit of toast and smoke are all present in this medium to full-bodied, elegant, yet savory, expansively flavored, deep, silky-textured wine that has outstanding depth, purity, and a good 20-second finish. This is approachable enough to drink in 2-3 years but certainly has the stuffing to last 15-18. 2011 – 2029. 90pts RP

Certan de May 2002 12 x 75cl at £450 IB x 2 cases

The deep ruby/plum-colored 2002 offers notes of cigar smoke, cedar, spice box, red currants, and herbs. This pleasant, one-dimensional offering should be drunk over the next 5-7 years. 2005-2012. 85pts RP

Leoville Barton 1996 12 x 75cl at £675 IB x 1 case

This impressive wine is a classic. Although backward, it exhibits a dense ruby/purple color in addition to abundant black currant fruit intertwined with spicy oak and truffle-like scents. The wine is brilliantly made, full-bodied, and tightly-structured with plenty of muscle and outstanding concentration and purity. It should turn out to be a long-lived Leoville Barton, and somewhat of a sleeper. However, patience will be required. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2030. 92pts RP
