New records set this past week whilst Mouton Rothschild reveals mixed results

We’re delighted that two new records were set in the last seven days at Cavex. First came the largest volume case deal to date with an 89 case parcel of Penfolds Bin 389 2010 trading at £145 per 6 x 75. Then came the highest single case value with a 6 x 75cl case of Domaine Romanee Conti’s Romanee Conti 1999 exchanging at £58,950. Although trade volume has dipped in February, there are still plenty of deals to be matched at all levels.

Overall offer value increased for the first time in a month with a climb of 2% during the week with £145,000 of new stock added for sale. Bid value has dropped off significantly with activity declining by 1.5% over the week, although £120,000 of new positions have been added. The bid to offer ratio has also taken a tumble to 2.16:1 and returns to a level not seen since early December.

Trade focused heavily on First Growths this week either with Asian merchants filling gaps in inventories where stocks have sold through, or UK sellers hitting bids looking for that willing buyer. This was reflected in varying data for Mouton Rothschild with gains for the 2003 up 0.6% since November at £1,560 (6 x 75) and the 2004 up 2.4% since December trading at £2,770 per 12.

This was in contrast to the 2007 at £2,750, down 1.8% since January with the 2009 trading at £4,450, down 2.2% in the same period. Lafite Rothschild also continued to slip with the 1998 and 2006 vintages both down a further 1%.

Whilst historically there used to be a premium paid for Magnums and some larger formats, there is clear evidence that in the current market place this is no longer the case. Lafite 2006 traded at £3,960 for a case of 6 x 150 Magnums and then three days later at 10% premium for 12 x 75 stock at £4,365. For the speculators willing to lay down icons, surely it’s worth considering some Magnums when prices are this good?

For this week’s offers, the focus is on what we believe are the best deals in the market and comparable to their last traded prices. There are some additional strong bids either above or at the last traded price so if they appear on the hot list and you have stock, it’s always worth taking a look. As usual, the full stock lists are downloadable in excel and PDF via the links below.
