One hundred new wines added for sale as bid to offer ratio swings and First Growth Bordeaux prices continue to soften

The past week has seen a substantial swing in the bid to offer ratio which has now reached 0.89:1 for the first time in many months. Despite nearly £100,000 worth of bids being placed over the past seven days, total bid value has dropped by 5.8% showing that confidence is still wavering. Bidders appear to be keeping a firm eye on the further softening of Bordeaux First Growth’s and high end wine prices although as market commentators are stating, we’re seeing a trend that older vintage wines are holding their value as availability diminishes.

Overall positions have grown slightly by 0.7%.  This is largely due to £205,000 new offers placed with 350 new cases up for sale. Highlights of the week are detailed in our ‘Hot Offers’ below though there are some great value offers still up for grabs from last week’s update. One of which is the last three cases of Paul Avril’s Clos des Papes 2004 at £320 per dozen.  At £130 under UK market and with 95pts from Robert Parker, this is without doubt our pick of the week.

We’ve seen further falls this past week in notable trades, Lafite 2009 trading at £6,450 per 12 down from £7,200 in November 2013. Latour 2000 at £7,000 also fell from £8,400 in August 2013, whilst the 2002 has dropped 13% since January to £3,230. Mouton Rothschild has not suffered such a substantial drop with the 2003 vintage trading at £3,050, only down £50 since January.

We recently highlighted that it’s not all about the top estates around the world and how there are some fantastic drinking wines to be found on the Cavex platform. As a result, members took advantage by picking up some great deals, two of which were d’Arenberg’s Coppermine Road 2001 trading at £70 per 6 and Henry’s Drive Estate Shiraz 2005 at £110 per dozen. Some good examples of deals that can be struck as sellers clear surplus stock that has reached its drinking window. With plenty of excellent wines from around the world available at Cavex, it’s always worth placing that bid.  Buyers will be pleasantly surprised to find that sellers are willing to trade if the bid is placed and available.
