While UK collectors and the Fine Wine trade collectively hold their breath and await the release of Bordeaux 2014, Burgundy and in particular Domaine Romanee Conti, continue to dominate global auctions. DRC wines continue to hold their prices having not experienced some of the fall in prices as seen in Bordeaux in recent years. With the upcoming auction to be held at Sotheby’s London on the 25th of March we thought we would highlight a significant private collection of older DRC’s stocks stored fastidiously since purchase. With no high hammer premiums to pay at Cavex its a great chance to get hold of some iconic vintages in absolute pristine condition.
Offered exclusively on the Cavex platform, a pristine IB collection of DRC, immediately available including:
1993 Grands Echezeaux at £4,100 per 6 x 75
“Much like the ’93 La Tâche, I confess to having mixed experiences with the ’93 GE, with some bottles showing brilliantly and others, like the one in this particular tasting, being tight to the point of an almost surly austerity and revealing next to nothing. By contrast, the best bottles in my experience display really lovely aromatics of entirely primary fruit aromas and spice notes that combine with powerful and concentrated flavors though the acidity has never seemed as well integrated as one might consider ideal. What is clear though in both cases is that this is a wine in need of lots of time and it wouldn’t surprise me if my projected initial drinking window proves to be too soon. Allen Meadows, Burghound May28, 2008 89pts”
1993 La Tache at £9,500 per 6 x 75
“This too evidences a slight floral quality, and a fascinating mix of earth, leather, tea and spice notes plus an interesting green bark component. The slightly austere, tannic, wonderfully rich flavors are dense, in fact extremely dense with excellent depth and terrific complexity and a finish that seems to go on forever. Though there are now hints of secondary aromas, this remains very young, structured and remarkably intense. When you get the right bottle, the ’93 can be a real stunner. Note: the inconsistency of this wine continues unabated as a bottle opened at the Domaine recently was almost aggressively vegetal and awkward. In short, when it’s good it’s very good but I’ve now had too many disappointing bottles not to be wary. Allen Meadows, Burghound May29, 2008 95pts”
1995 Romanee St Vivant at £4,200 per 6 x 75
“Gorgeous, sexy, opulently perfumed fruit followed by medium weight, intense, backward, beautifully textured flavors underpinned by solid but ripe tannins and the same floral note that many of these ’95s display. This is really quite lovely with a really impressive purity of expression and should age well for years. Allen Meadows, Burghound Apr01, 2005 95pts”
1996 Echezeaux at £4,000 per 6 x 75
“The Domaine de la Romanée-Conti fashioned outstanding ’96s and while this will not challenge the dominance of its more esteemed stable mates, it is clearly a lovely effort. The expressive nose displays lovely spice and violet aromas that offer more elegance and finesse than usual and lead to rich, sweet and moderately structured flavors supported by bright but not aggressive acidity and excellent finishing persistence. I quite like the ’96 Ech and while it could be approached now with the right food, it would be better to let this slumber in the cellar for another 5 to 8 years before drinking over the following decade. Allen Meadows, Burghound Aug30, 2008 91pts”
1999 Echezeaux at £4,950 per 6 x 75
“Explosive fruit of blackberries, vanilla and oriental spice with extremely ripe, relatively supple black fruit, round, sexy flavors underpinned by good structure, ripe tannins and fine acid/fruit balance. This is still very tight but there is good vigor, indeed even force behind this wine. One of the better DRC Echézeaux in a long time, in fact as good as the terrific ’88 though stylistically different. Allen Meadows, Burghound Jan30, 2003 92pts”
1999 Richebourg at £11,950 per 6 x 75
“Practically black with a supersaturated multidimensional nose of black cherries, spice and trace of new oak. Bigger and larger scaled than the RSV and much more linear and direct, it is the richest, most robust wine in this lineup with decidedly muscular tannins. The flavor profile is somewhat austere yet the length is phenomenal and this could be the longest lived wine among these in ’99. This has as much potential as any DRC Richebourg I’ve ever had. Allen Meadows, Burghound Oct09, 2002 95pts”
1999 Romanee St Vivant at £6,250 per 6 x 75
“A slightly green note is buried beneath the remarkably dense aromas of classic Vosne spice and crushed blackberries, full-bodied, very sappy flavors with a terrific inner core of complexity and still more spice. The purity of extract displayed here is mind bending and the overall harmony of expression is something to see. This remains quite backwards and will require plenty of patience. Allen Meadows, Burghound Apr01, 2005 94pts”
2001 Echezeaux at £7,500 per 6 x 150
“Knockout sexy black fruit aromas trimmed in a deft touch of oak and distinct animale notes with expressive, full, pure, sweet and quite powerful flavors and a long, persistent, mouth coating finish. The amount of sève is impressive as is the sheer spiciness and this is a good deal more refined than it usually is. A great vintage for this wine. Allen Meadows, Burghound Jan01, 2004 92pts”
2002 Echezeaux at £2,100 per 3 x 75
“Deep ruby. This too is very spicy and even more aromatically expressive revealing linear, taut, intense, wonderfully complex, solidly structured flavors that display impressive acid/fruit/tannin balance. This culminates in a gorgeous inner mouth perfume and a tight, very firm finish of notable length. This may have over achieved in 2002 relative to its usual standard. Allen Meadows, Burghound Jan01, 2005 92pts”
2002 Assortment at £5,400 per 6 x 75 – Includes 1 x LT, RI, RSV, GE, EC, VRDB
